Illustrations by Caroline Blunt About Alchemy Early Years Observing young children in their play is a fascinating and inspiring experience. It seems clear that Early Years children naturally improvise creative movement, music and story in their imaginative play, often combining and moving between these activities in surprising and inventive ways. Alchemy sessions aim to follow this example, taking up children’s creative suggestions (whether communicated verbally or otherwise) as much as possible and combining activities as appropriate.

Fun, imaginative and multicultural, the workshops are full of creative learning opportunities. Sessions aim to spark children’s imagination, develop expressive communication (verbal and non-verbal) and social skills within a supportive and safe environment. Intergenerational activities have always been important to me so sessions where carers, parents and grandparents and staff participate together are particular favourites of mine. Over the last 16 years my community and education work has focused primarily on working with the Under Fives age group. I have had the privilege and opportunity to develop my approach with Early Years children, their adults and guest musicians altogether – a truly magical and inspiring combination of people. I travel in the UK and abroad facilitating workshops, participatory performances and Professional Development Training in Early Years settings, performance venues, community centres, schools, parks, libraries and festivals.
